Nutrition & Lifestyle

“Ayurveda is the science of life.”

– Shubra Krishan –

Have you ever heard the saying, “One person’s bread can be another person’s poison”?

Did you wonder why the diets and healthy food (or so-called superfood) that worked for others do not work with you?

In Ayurveda, food is not only a source of life energy but also a powerful therapeutic tool as every food has medicinal value. Ayurveda does not categorize food as inherently good or bad. In fact it is not about the food but about your digestion capacity which is deeply connected to the state of your digestive fire, known as Agni. When our Agni is functioning properly, it facilitates efficient metabolism, nourishment of tissues, growth, and enhanced immunity.

Ayurveda recognizes that each individual has a unique constitution and digestive capacity. Therefore, the healthy nutrition in Ayurveda is about taking into consideration factors such as one’s Agni strength, digestive capacity, and specific health situation. By nurturing a balanced and well-functioning Agni, we can optimize the process of digestion and assimilation, ensuring that nutrients are effectively utilized by the body to support overall health and vitality. Another important factor for healthy nutrition in Ayurveda is consuming seasonal and locally produced food, which will be easily recognized and absorbed by enzymes in your gut.

We each have our unique lifestyles, but as human beings, we share common natural patterns such as sleeping, waking up, eating, working, and engaging in various activities. Instinctively, we have an innate understanding of when these patterns should occur throughout the day and even throughout the year. This is how Nature orchestrates the entire Universe, including us, within the 24-hour cycle. In modern science it is called circadian rhythm.

However, the demands of our modern, busy lives often compel us to sacrifice the natural rhythms of sleep, eating, and rest. Straying too far from these natural patterns can disrupt the harmony within our bodies and minds.

As we live out of sync with our natural rhythms both in terms of lifestyle and nutrition, our bodies can initially adapt and cope to some extent. However, over time, our body’s reserves become depleted, leading to various mild signs such as headaches, stiffness in the neck and shoulders, or constipation. Often, we suppress these signs with quick fixes and medications, until one day our body demands serious attention and repair.
